ATP - FIRST TITLE IN 2008 Roger began his clay season with success as he won his first title of 2008 with a 7-6 (7-5), 1-2 victory as Nikolay Davydenko retired injured at the Estoril Open on Sunday. Our star improved his record against the world number four Russian to a perfect 12-0 as he won only their third encounter on clay. "It's great to win a title, it's fantastic," said Roger. "This will give me great confidence for the rest of the season having won my first clay tournament of the year." The victory was his seventh on the surface and was obtained in challenging, blustery conditions."These were the most difficult of the week," said the Swiss holder of 12 Grand Slam titles. "It was cold as well as windy. This is not the best way to win a match and I'm sorry for Nikolay. But sometimes these things happen."

(You forget. I make a living impersoanting these people.)
(Well,you are all set then.) (I suppose life must go on).
“Well, I was sitting there realizing that I was saying good bye to everybody out there, and they were saying good bye to me,” he said of his on court tears. “It's saying good bye. It's a necessary evil. But we were getting through it together. That felt amazing.”
Roger Federer moved into joint second place on the list of all-time ATP Masters Series titles winners when he withstood a blistering opening from Richard Gasquet to win the Rogers Masters 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The ATP World No. 1’s 11th career ATP Masters Series shield ties him with Pete Sampras in second place behind Andre Agassi, who owns 17 shields.
Federer extended his Masters Series dominance along with Rafael Nadal. The players have now won 13 of the past 15 ATP Masters Series Shields (neither player competed in the two events won by other players since the start of 2005).
Federer becomes the new leader of the US Open Series Lever 2000 Challenge standings.
Federer, who turned 25 Tuesday, has now reached the final in his last 17 tournaments dating back to June 2005 at Halle. That streak is the second-best of the Open Era behind Ivan Lendl's 18 straight finals in 1981-82.
The last time Federer failed to reach a final was at Roland Garros last year when he lost in the semifinals to Rafael Nadal. He has now reached the final of his past seven ATP Masters Series events, winning five shields. He has won nine of the past 13 ATP Masters Series tournaments he has played.
This year Federer is 62-4 on the season, including 7-4 in finals, with all four losses coming to Nadal. He won the 40th title of his career, now sporting a 40-13 record in finals. He has garnered at least seven crowns in each of the past three years – seven in 2003, 11 each in ’04, ’05 and now seven in 2006.
Federer now journeys to Cincinnati, where he suffered his most recent loss on North American hard courts two years ago in the first round against Dominik Hrbaty.
During that streak, he has won nine titles -- the US Open and Tennis Masters Cup in Houston in 2004, Indian Wells, Miami, Cincinnati, and the US Open in 2005 and Indian Wells, Miami and Toronto this year.
Federer was playing his first tournament since winning Wimbledon on July 9 and now has a 18-match winning streak. Federer is 84-2 on hard courts over 2005-06, going 50-1 last season and 34-1 thus far this year.
He clinched his second Canadian title. In 2004, he captured the Toronto crown over Roddick. Federer has a career record of 15-3 in this tournament.
Gasquet is on a hot streak, winning 15 of his past 18 matches to recover from a 7-13 start to the season.
He played his third ATP final of the year – all of them in the past two months. He won both previous finals: capturing the titles at Nottingham in June (d. Bjorkman) and Gstaad in July (d. Lopez).
Gasquet was playing in his second ATP Masters Series final. He was runner-up at Hamburg last May to Federer. The last Frenchman to win an ATP Masters Series title was Sebastien Grosjean in 2001 in Paris.
This is the sixth final of Gasquet’s ATP career. He has won three titles – the two this year and one last year at Nottingham (d. Mirnyi).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Federer: "I couldn't believe I started the second set so bad. That's like a key moment of the match. At the same time, you know, by giving yourself a Love-40, you can also take away his confidence by coming back in that game and winning that game, make him start doubting himself, like that was maybe his big opportunity.
"It's actually been a very interesting week for me, to come through. It was a physical test, too, a mental test. In the end today especially it was very close coming back from losing the first set.
"I just have a very strong belief in my capabilities, in not showing my opponent how I feel, fighting like crazy even though it doesn't look like I am maybe because I have such a relaxed style of play. I just always do believe that I can turn any match around. That's what happened today. I know that once I turn it around, once I would take the lead, then it would be very difficult for my opponent. That's what I always tell myself. Maybe it's an illusion sometimes, but it definitely works."
On his 54-match winning streak on North American hard courts: "I was really struggling over here in the beginning of my career. I thought it was always too windy, too humid, too hot, too not my style. Now all of a sudden I've turned this all around. I really enjoy playing here. The night sessions I like. I couldn't play before in the night either."
Gasquet: "I did a fantastic first set. I was really good with my forehand, with my backhand. I played wonderful. He missed a little bit. 6-2 for me. He didn't serve well, so I could return good with my backhand. It was the key of the first set.
"After, I didn't play... I had three break points in the first game in the second. I lost this point. After it will be really hard because I know with Roger when you have some chances, you have to do it. If I do 1-0 break with me, it would be another match.
"It's better for me to say I can beat him than I can't. But, no, he has more experience, more matches than me, more wins than me. I am just 20, so I have time to play him. I know in the future I can beat him."
Top seed and World No.1 Roger Federer won the coveteted Wimbledon crown for the fourth consecutive year as the Swiss star defeated World No.2 and Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal 6-0, 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-3. This was Federer’s eighth Grand Slam crown and 39th career title.
With the win Federer became only the sixth man to secure four straight Wimbledon titles (William Renshaw, Reggie Doherty, Laurie Doherty, Anthony Wilding, Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras) and the eighth player to win four or more crowns at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club.
Federer also extended his grass-court winning streak to 48 matches and captured his eighth title on this surface. He stands third in the all-time grass court title leaders (tied with John McEnroe) behind Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras (10).
Federer stamped his authority on the match early, brekaing Nadal - who entered the final having held 80 consecutive service games - in the second, fourth and sixth games to win the opening set 6-0. But it was the Spaniard who started things quickly in the second, breaking Federer (who had been broken just twice in the tournament) in the first game and then serving for the set at 5-4. When the match seemed to go to a third set with the players tied at one set apiece, Federer broke the Spaniard back and took the set to a decisive tie-break in which he won 7-5.
The third set had no breaks of serve and the World’s top two players went once again to a tie-break in which Nadal came out on top 7-2. In the fourth set Federer took early control, breaking Nadal at 2-1 and 4-1 to serve out the set at 5-3 (lost serve when serving for the match at 5-1).
The top seed, who dropped only 52 games en route to the final (the fewest that any player has conceded in reaching the men’s singles final), lost his only set during the entire tournament. The last man to win a Grand Slam title without dropping a set was Bjorn Borg at 1980 Roland Garros.
Federer has suffered only four losses in the current season (all to Nadal in finals). He holds a 32-4 record at Wimbledon and 56-4 record in the season. He now trails Nadal 2-5 in their head-to-head meetings.

World No. 1 and top seed Roger Federer against World No. 2 and second seed Rafael Nadal in the final of Roland Garros. It couldn’t have been scripted any better. Sunday’s match between the two evokes memories of past Grand Slam finals between the top two players in the world – Sampras vs. Agassi, McEnroe vs. Borg for example.
Federer, of course, is trying to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win four straight Grand Slam events, a streak that began at Wimbledon last year. Meanwhile, Nadal is seeking to extend his Open Era record of 59 straight matches won on clay and defend his crown in Paris (d. Puerta in 2005).
Federer, 24, hails from Switzerland, while Nadal who turned 20 last Saturday, comes from Spain. The two have met six times during their ATP careers, with Nadal coming out on top in five of those encounters, including all three times on clay. Last year at Roland Garros, the Spanish sensation took out Federer in the semifinals.
Here is a history of the duo’s six previous meetings, from the first match at Miami in March 2004 (a victory for Nadal) to their most recent match in Rome last month (also a win for Nadal).
Here is a look at their head2head series:
2004 NASDAQ-100 Open, Miami, 3rd RD. Nadal d. Federer 63 63 Federer came into the ATP Masters Series event on a roll, having won the Australian Open final over Marat Safin in February and the Pacific Life Open (also a Masters Series event) in Indian Wells over Tim Henman just before coming to Miami. He had lost only once in 2004 prior to this match (in the quarterfinals of Rotterdam to Henman). Nadal, the youngest man in the tournament at 17, was just starting to emerge as a force on the ATP circuit and hadn’t yet won a title. He breezed by Federer in only 69 minutes for the best win of his career at that point. The Spaniard said after the match that it was probably the best he had ever served.
2005 NASDAQ-1OO Open, Miami, F. Federer d. Nadal 26 67(4) 76(5) 63 61 Federer was primed for revenge. Again he came into the Miami event with only one loss for the year (to Safin in the semifinals of the Australian Open) and fresh off a title in Indian Wells (d. Hewitt). Nadal was a year older and wiser, already having won three ATP titles. The balls were flying at Federer from Nadal’s exploding topspin groundstrokes, and the Spaniard was running down every ball in sight. Before he knew it, Federer was down 5-3 in the third set tie-break, two points from defeat. But he rallied back, and leveled the head-to-head series at 1-1
2005 Roland Garros, Paris, SF. Nadal d. Federer 63 46 64 63 Just like this year at Roland Garros, theirs was the most eagerly awaited match of the tournament. Federer was already No. 1 in the world, and Nadal was fourth, behind No. 2 Marat Safin and No. 3 Andy Roddick. Nadal came to Roland Garros on the heels of clay-court titles at the ATP Masters Series events at Monte-Carlo in April (d. Coria) and at Rome in May (d. Coria again). Federer, meanwhile, was fresh off of his second straight clay-court crown at Masters Series Hamburg in May (d. Gasquet). Federer evened the score by winning the second set, but after that his form fell, while Nadal kept the pressure on, ousting Federer in four sets on the way to winning the Roland Garros title on debut.
2006 Dubai Tennis Championships, Dubai, F. Nadal d. Federer 26 64 64 This year, Federer came into the pair’s first encounter (in March) undefeated, having won the title at Doha (d. Monfils) and the Australian Open (d. Baghdatis). Nadal was just getting his groove back after suffering an ankle injury at the Madrid Masters Series event in October. Dubai was only Nadal’s second tournament since suffering the injury. He opened the year with a semifinal showing at Marseille in February (l. to Clement). This was the first match between Federer and Nadal with the Spanish superstar holding the INDESIT ATP Ranking of No. 2. Nadal won the encounter despite winning less points: 71 to 78. They each broke serve three times, but Nadal won the points that mattered. The win represented his 10th straight victory in finals. Nadal’s victory also broke Federer’s Open Era record of 56 straight match wins on hard courts.
2006 Masters Series Monte-Carlo, F. Nadal d. Federer 62 67(2) 63 76(5) Between the Dubai match and this one in April, Federer went undefeated, winning Masters Series events for the third year in a row at Indian Wells (d. Blake) and the second year in a row at Miami (d. Ljubicic). Nadal, meanwhile, reached the semifinals of Indian Wells (l. to Blake) and fell in the second round at Miami (to Moya). But Nadal regained his footing at Monte-Carlo. He took the exciting match in 3 hours and 49 minutes and overcome a 0-3 deficit in the final tie-break.
2006 Masters Series Rome, F. Nadal d. Federer 67(0) 76(5) 64 26 76(5) In May, only three weeks after their Monte-Carlo match, Federer and Nadal were at it again. Federer rested in the time in between the two tournaments, while Nadal went to Barcelona and won the title (d. Robredo). This match was the best between the two warriors yet, lasting five hours and five minutes. Federer forced the action, successfully approaching the net again and again. The Swiss tennis genius won more points than Nadal, just like in Dubai, 179 to 174. But once more Nadal won the big points. Federer had two match points with Nadal serving at 5-6, 15-40 in the final set. But he missed forehands on both opportunities. With the victory, Nadal tied Guillermo Vilas’ Open Era record of 53 straight match wins on clay. He also lifted his career record in finals to 16-2, the best winning percentage in Open Era history. Even after the defeat, Federer had an incredible 2006 record of 39-3, with all three losses at the hands of Nadal.
Roger Federer and David Nalbandian have been fierce rivals since their junior days. The vast majority of their epic battles have come on the biggest stages in world tennis. Ten of their 11 professional meetings have come either at Grand Slam tournaments or at ATP Masters Series level.
Nalbandian is one of few players to hold a winning record against the all-conquering Federer. The Argentine won their first five meetings and, helped by a dramatic fifth-set tie-break win in last year’s Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai final, maintains a 6-5 career edge.
But ATP World No. 1 Federer has the chance Friday to even the ledger when the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds meet in the Roland Garros semifinals. Federer is attempting to reach his 14th consecutive final and – ultimately – become just the third player in history to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time.
Juniors Federer and Nalbandian both compiled outstanding junior careers, with their best seasons coming in 1998. Federer finished that year as the world’s No. 1 junior, with the Argentine just two places below. The teenagers met twice that year in their only junior meetings: In the US Open boys’ singles final Nalbandian defeated Federer, the Wimbledon junior champion, 6-3, 7-5. The Swiss gained his revenge later that year in December, winning their semifinal at the Orange Bowl in Miami 6-4, 6-2 before going on to defeat Guillermo Coria in the final.
2002 Masters Series Monte-Carlo, 2nd RD. Nalbandian d. Federer 62 61 Both players came into their first professional meeting on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo in good form. Federer had just reached his first ATP Masters Series final in Miami (he lost to Andre Agassi in four sets) while Nalbandian had just captured his first ATP title on the clay in Estoril. In the second round in the Principality, the unseeded Nalbandian crushed the No. 9 seeded Federer in straight sets. Nalbandian Leads 1-0.
2002 Davidoff Swiss Indoors, Basel, SF. Nalbandian d. Federer 67(2) 75 63 It was late October and the heart of the indoor season. Federer, the No. 3 seed, was looking to reach his third consecutive final in his hometown of Basel and keep alive his hopes of a Tennis Masters Cup berth in Shanghai. Nalbandian, the No. 6 seed and Wimbledon runner-up, had other ideas. Federer came back from 3-5 down in the first set to win the tie-break, and went up a break in the second and third sets before the Argentine hit back to win in 2 hours, 15 minutes. Nalbandian went on to claim his second ATP title, defeating Fernando Gonzalez in the final. Federer, who had just four titles at the time, would win 23 more titles before Nalbandian would claim his third career title (Munich, 2005) Nalbandian Leads 2-0.
2003 Australian Open, 4th RD. Nalbandian d. Federer 64 36 61 16 63. Nalbandian came into their fourth round match under the lights at Melbourne Park looking to reach his second Grand Slam quarterfinal, while Federer had never made it beyond the last 16 in Australia. After five grueling sets, Nalbandian held off Federer’s challenge to win their first professional hard court meeting. Federer would win seven of the next 12 Grand Slam tournaments he entered (through Australian Open 2006). Nalbandian Leads 3-0.
2003 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, Cincinnati, 2nd RD. Nalbandian d. Federer 76(4) 76(5). Federer, the newly crowned Wimbledon champion and INDESIT ATP Race leader, had won 20 of his past 22 matches, while Nalbandian had just reached his first ATP Masters Series final in Montreal, where he lost to Andy Roddick. In the first round in Cincinnati, Federer saved seven match points against Scott Draper, but he could not escape a second time as the unseeded Nalbandian won both tie-breaks to reach the third round and maintain his perfect record against the Swiss. Nalbandian Leads 4-0.
2003 US Open, 4th RD. Nalbandian d. Federer 36 76(1) 64, 63. Both players were full of confidence going into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. Federer still led the INDESIT ATP Race with an ATP-best 58 match wins, while Nalbandian also entered the Top 10 Leader Board and had upset Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis in the third round. Federer took the first set and was up an early break in the second, but back came the Argentine once again, winning the second set tie-break before completing his four-set victory. Nalbandian went on to the semifinals and had a match point against eventual champion Roddick before losing in five sets. Nalbandian Leads 5-0.
2003 Tennis Masters Cup Houston, RR. Federer d. Nalbandian 63 60. Nalbandian had maintained his form on the indoor circuit, reaching a second consecutive final in Basel to qualify for his first circuit finale in Houston. Federer had won his sixth title of the season in Vienna, and had recorded his first victory over Andre Agassi in the first round robin match. Determined to end another losing streak against Nalbandian, the Swiss snapped his five-match losing streak, losing just three games against the Argentine. He went on to win the Masters Cup for the first time. Nalbandian Leads 5-1.
2004 Australian Open, QF. Federer d. Nalbandian 75 64 57 63. Having defeated Nalbandian for the first time just two months earlier and finishing the year as the World No. 2 behind Roddick, Federer was on a mission. Despite dropping the third set, the Swiss rallied to win their quarterfinal in four sets before going on to claim his second Grand Slam title and become World No. 1 for the first time. Nalbandian Leads 5-2.
2005 US Open, QF. Federer d Nalbandian 62 64 61 In one of his most emphatic victories over Nalbandian, Federer dropped just seven games in a 1 hr., 40 minute demolition, despite the Argentine holding early breaks in the first two sets. Federer would go on to defend his US Open title and in doing so became the first player since Don Budge in 1937-38 to complete the Wimbledon/US Open double in back-to-back years. Nalbandian Leads 5-3.
2005 Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai RR. Federer d Nalbandian 63 26 64 Playing his first match in six weeks since spraining his ankle at practice, two-time reigning Tennis Masters Cup champion Federer made a hesitant start to the circuit finale in Shanghai. Federer won six of the last seven games of the match and rallied from 1-3 in the third set to defeat Nalbandian and improve his outstanding Masters Cup record to 14-1. Nalbandian Leads 5-4. (Match report)
2005 Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai F. Nalbandian d Federer 67(4) 67(11) 62 61 76(3) Playing the biggest match of his life, Nalbandian this time was the one to rally from the brink of defeat to snap a four-match losing streak against Federer to win the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai title. The win was validation for Nalbandian, who was regarded by many as one of the world’s best players despite having won just three smaller titles during his career.
Nalbandian ended Federer’s 35-match winning streak and also snapped Federer’s record 24-match winning streak in finals. Had Federer won that match he would have tied John McEnroe’s 1984 season record of 82-3, which is the best winning percentage in a season in the Open Era.
Federer, whose sublime movement had been restricted all week due to his ankle injury, rallied from 0-4 in the fifth set to be within two points of victory when serving for the match at 6-5, 30/0. But Nalbandian broke back and clinched the title in a tie-break. Nalbandian Leads 6-4. (Match report)
2006 Masters Series Rome SF. Federer d Nalbandian 63 36 76(5) For the second consecutive meeting, this match was decided by a final-set tie-break. Riding a nine-match winning streak dating back to his title run in Estoril, Nalbandian grabbed a 2-0 lead in the final set. Federer then won four straight games but Nalbandian broke back to level at 4-4 and the match went to a tie-break, which Federer won 7-5.
After 2 hrs., 43 mins., Federer advanced to his 13th consecutive final (where he would hold two match points against Rafael Nadal but lose in a fifth-set tie-break.) Nalbandian Leads 6-5. (Match report)
